Why US Motor Insurance Costs Keep Rising

Motor 3 min read

The cost of auto insurance has been increasing at an alarming rate. In the past 12 months alone, premiums have surged by 22.7%, far outpacing other common expenses. This trend isn't just a recent anomaly; over the last four years, auto insurance costs have risen by a staggering 46%. What’s driving these increases, and why are auto insurance companies struggling to keep up?

Financial Struggles and Customer Dissatisfaction

2022 was a particularly tough year for auto insurance companies, which lost 12 cents for every premium dollar—a financial loss not seen in over 20 years. This financial strain is reflected in customer satisfaction levels, which are now at their lowest point in two decades.

Rising Costs of Cars and Repairs

Several factors contribute to the soaring costs of auto insurance:

  • New and Used Car Prices: While the price of new cars has increased by 11.7% over the past four years, the cost of used cars has jumped by an astonishing 37%. Higher car values mean higher insurance payouts in the event of theft or accidents.
  • Repair Costs: The cost of vehicle repairs has gone up by 11.6% in the last year alone. While significant, this increase still lags behind the rise in insurance premiums. Annual repair and maintenance costs have shifted from 3.5-5% pre-pandemic to over 10% in 2022, reaching an average of $4,721 in 2023. Over the past four years, repair costs have increased by 35%, still trailing behind the 46% increase in insurance costs.
  • Car Theft: Car theft rates have surged dramatically. In 2023, motor vehicle theft jumped by 29% based on data from 34 cities, and theft rates have more than doubled since 2019. An average of one vehicle is stolen every 32 seconds, totaling over one million vehicles stolen last year. The first half of 2023 saw a 34% increase in vehicle theft compared to the same period last year and a 104% increase compared to 2019.

Geographic Variations in Theft Rates

The increase in motor vehicle theft varies significantly by region. For example:

  • District of Columbia: 64% increase
  • Maryland: 63% increase
  • Connecticut: 33% increase
  • Denver: Saw a 22% decrease in thefts
  • Rochester, New York: Experienced a 355% spike in vehicle theft
  • St. Paul, Minnesota: Noted a 41% drop in thefts

The Impact of Uninsured Drivers

A significant portion of the driving population is uninsured, further complicating the insurance landscape:

  • Nationwide: 13% of drivers are uninsured.
  • Mississippi: Only 30% of drivers have insurance, leaving 70% uninsured.
  • New Jersey: Has the highest rate of insured drivers at 97%.

Fatalities and Financial Losses

The number of fatalities on the road has increased by 17% from 2019 to 2023, adding to the risk profile that insurance companies must cover. Financially, auto insurance companies have faced substantial losses, with a collective loss of $196 billion in 2021 rising to $242.93 billion in 2022, marking a 23% increase. The trend continues with a further 22% increase from 2022 to 2023, indicating ongoing financial struggles for insurers.

The "Kia Boys" Phenomenon

A unique challenge has emerged with certain vehicle models, particularly Kia. The "Kia Boys" on TikTok have popularized methods of stealing Kias, leading to a surge in thefts. As a result, some insurance companies are now reluctant to insure these vehicles.

Conclusion

The skyrocketing cost of auto insurance is driven by a complex interplay of rising vehicle and repair costs, increasing rates of theft, and financial challenges within the insurance industry itself. Until these underlying issues are addressed, consumers can expect to see their premiums continue to rise, reflecting the higher risks and costs that insurance companies must bear.
